Why Review Motor Capacitors
A motor run capacitor looks like a simple part, but it stays in circuit for the entire life of the equipment and carries a continuous alternating current at mains frequency. Its capacitance stability, its behaviour over temperature and its end-of-life safety decide whether the motor keeps its design torque and whether a failure stays contained. This review examines Faratronic AC motor capacitors from the perspective of an FAE who supports customers through design-in, focusing on the C61 box type and the C65 explosion-proof cylinder.
The C61 Box Capacitor
The C61, known in the market as the CBB61, is a compact plastic-box capacitor for fans, pumps and small single-phase motors. Its metallized polypropylene film gives self-healing behaviour and stable capacitance, and the plastic case suits a tight appliance layout where a cylinder would not fit. Covering roughly 1 uF to 100 uF at 250 Vac to 450 Vac, it is the part most small motors use, and its value to a designer is the stability: the capacitor that keeps its capacitance keeps the motor near its design point for years.
Capacitance Stability
On the bench, the capacitance of a good metallized film motor capacitor stays within a close tolerance over temperature and time, unlike a failing electrolytic or a poorly made film part. That stability is what preserves the phase shift that produces the rotating field, and therefore the starting torque and the running current. A drifting capacitor is a slow, hidden cause of motor overheating.
The C65 Explosion-Proof Cylinder
The C65, known as the CBB65, is a cylindrical aluminum-case capacitor with an explosion-proof design for compressors and larger single-phase motors. The aluminum case handles the vibration of a compressor and conducts heat away, and it covers roughly 4 uF to 100 uF at 250 Vac to 450 Vac. The anti-explosion feature is the reason to choose it: a pressure-disconnect mechanism opens the circuit if the internal pressure rises at end of life, so the capacitor fails safe instead of venting or bursting, which is exactly what a refrigeration or air-conditioning circuit needs.
Safety Class
Faratronic builds motor capacitors to IEC 60252-1, and the C6G series carries the S3(P2) safety class, the highest for AC motor capacitors, meaning the part does not fail dangerously at end of life. For equipment that must meet the strictest rules, a safety-class part is not optional.
Practical Notes
Match the capacitance and tolerance to the motor maker specification, keep the capacitor away from the hottest parts of the enclosure and check the terminal type for the intended mounting. The BeiLuo FAE team helps match the part to the motor and confirm stock and lead time.
Long-Term Behaviour
What matters over the life of the equipment is not the initial capacitance but the capacitance after years of temperature cycling. A self-healing metallized film part keeps most of its value after a clearing event, so the motor continues to run near its design point, while a poorer part drifts and slowly overheats the winding. That long-term stability is the quiet value a good motor capacitor delivers, and it is the reason the part should be chosen for the whole life of the appliance rather than on price alone.
